A while ago we were contacted by a jewelry company that created cz or cubic zirconia rings, bracelets, necklaces, brooches, and earrings. If you are not familiar with this synthetic gemstone, it very closely resembles diamonds. It is a highly popular gemstone and the perfect substitute for those who are unable to afford a piece of jewelry that has diamonds as its stone. There are a few key features of cubic zirconia which distinguish it from diamond. The density of cubic zirconia is about 1.7 times that of diamond while is hardness rating is approximately 8 on Mohs hardness scale vs. a rating of 10 for diamond. The Mohs hardness scale of minerals is a relative scale with a mineral’s hardness is a reflection of its molecular structure. In other words, the spacing of the various atoms and the strength of the chemical bonds between them. So cubic zirconia is relatively hard, making it more scratch resistant than some other gems. One of the most defining differences between diamonds and cubic zirconia is that the synthetic gemstone has a very high dispersion number of 0.058–0.066, exceeding a diamond’s 0.044. Cubic zirconia jewelry will have a more brilliant sparkle than diamonds. Jewelers have more flexibilty in cutting the facet edges of the gem stone. They can be rounded or “smooth”. Only the rarest of diamonds are truly colorless. Most diamonds have a tinge of yellow or brown. Cubic zirconia on the other hand are often entirely colorless with a color rating of the equivalent to a perfect “D” on diamond’s color grading scale. Some manufacturers of cubic zirconia create stunning colors for their gems in order to set them apart from their competitors. With the addition of certain metal oxide dopants into the feed powder for cubic zirconia, yellow, orange, red, green, purple, pink, and even golden brown cubic zirconia gems are available.

Anyway, this client was in the process of creating a new line of cubic zirconia jewelry in a multi-color look. They wanted a unique packaging to go out with the roll out introduction and press party. Our approach to this project allowed us to minimize the risks associated with package development to guarantee our and our clients success. Our creative team was able bring the CZ project to commercialization on time, in spec, and within budget.
