High Speed Thermoformer Provides Benefits to Creative Forming's Operations

Kiefel KMD 85 thermoformer

Ripon, Wisconsin, August 1, 2006 - Higher speeds, higher product volume, and cost efficiencies - these are all qualities that Creative Forming's new thermoformer, the Kiefel KMD 85, brings to the company’s operations.

Arriving July 31, the KMD 85 was shipped from Germany on four sea-containers via semi trailers. Requiring a crane to unload, the new thermoformer will be up and running within 3-4 weeks of set-up.

The Kiefel KMD 85 thermoformer is Creative Forming’s newest thermoform press, and the second high speed Kiefel machine owned by Creative. The machine was purchased from Kiefel at the NPE Show in Chicago held in June 2006. This new Kiefel is Creative's second machine. The first, an identical one, was added to Creative's plant in January 2006. Its superior performance led to the purchase of the second machine.

“This second KMD will allow us additional capacity,” said Tam Joines, Manager of Manufacturing Engineering at Creative Forming. “It also has cut and place capabilities that will provide superior trim registration and allow us to do jobs that we were previously not able to do.”

The KMD is equivalent in size to the other thermoformers but has many manufacturing features that other machines lack.

“It has advanced controls and technology that provide a much higher cycle speed compared to the other machines,” explained Joines.

The Kiefel KMD 85 can produce 70-80 cycles a minute compared to some machines that can only do 10-20 maximum. With the new machine's technology, Creative Forming will be able to produce at a higher capacity and be more efficient as well as cost effective.

“The KMD 85 is much more change-over friendly, meaning we can produce product after product in a faster and easier method,” added Joines.

The two new thermoformers will be assets to business due to its flexibility, cost savings, and reduction of inventory at the plant.

According to Joines, “We will be able to reduce inventory while still getting products shipped out to our customers with the addition of the two thermoformers."

The KMD 85 will be running a variety of projects including food packaging which will account for 80% of the machines usage. Projects requiring faster turn-around and speed will also be produced on the new thermoformer.
