When major product manufacturer P&G sought to enhance the packaging of its newest Oil of Olay moisturizer, they turned to the experts at Creative Forming to create a clamshell that improved its appearance and durability.

The clamshell had to meet four critical objectives:

To accomplish the stated objectives, the design team created a system of three separate undercuts to hold the jar firmly in the back of the clamshell, thus keeping the jar from turning around and facing outward.

Creative Forming devised a simple yet ingenious design utilizing small vacuum holes and a highly polished mold to give the clamshell a high clarity front surface to maximize viewing of the product and the internal carton printing. Easy-to-use snaps and hinges were used for manual filling.

“Since this is one of our high-end products, we were pleased with Creative Forming’s ability to design and produce a clamshell that showcases the contents at the point of purchase,” said Ty Martin, P&G’s senior engineer.

An entirely in-house project, the mold was built by our internal tooling shop, while the sheet was extruded within our ALPHATEC EXTRUSION® division.

Not only did our custom solution for Oil of Olay meet its challenging objectives, it surpassed every expectation. This unique design won an award at the prestigious Society of Plastics Engineers 11th Thermoforming Parts Competition.
